A Christian is one who has received, and in whose mind dwells, the Holy Spirit of God.
But how does one receive the Spirit of God?
The apostle Peter said,
"Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38)
Being baptized is the outward manifestation of inner
faith in Christ. Repentance is not merely being sorry for something one
has done - or even for having committed many sins.
It is a real
repentance of what one is and has been - of his whole attitude and life apart from God. It is a total change of mind and heart and direction of life. It is a change to a new way of life.
It is a turning from the self-centered way of vanity, selfishness, greed, hostility, envy, jealousy and unconcern for the good and welfare of others to the God-centered way of love and obedience toward God, and of love and concern for other humans.
Love is the fulfillment of God's law (Romans 13:10). God's law can be fulfilled only by "the love of God... poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit" (Romans 5:5
The Holy Spirit will open one's mind to understand God's instruction on how to live in Christ, but it will not force one to live God's way - it will not pull or push one.
Each Christian must take his own inititive, though God's Spirit will give him help, faith and power. But it is "as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons for God" (Romans 8:14).
Verdadeiro arrependimento.
Um Cristão é aquele que recebeu, e em cuja mente habita, o Espírito Santo de Deus.
Mas como alguém recebe o Espírito de Deus?
O apóstolo Pedro disse:
"Arrependei-vos, e cada um de vós seja batizado no nome de Jesus Cristo, para remissão dos vossos pecados; e recebereis a figura do Espírito Santo." Atos 2:38
Ser batizado é a manifestação externa da fé interior em Cristo. O arrependimento não é meramente arrepender-se de algo que alguém fez - ou mesmo arrepender-se de algo ou mesmo por ter cometido muitos pecados.
É um verdadeiro arrependimento do que é e tem sido - de toda sua atitude e vida à parte de Deus. É uma mudança total de mente e coração e direção de vida. É uma mudança para um novo modo de vida.
É um desvio do modo egocêntrico de vaidade, egoismo, cobiça, hostilidade, inveja, ciúme e despreocupação pelo bem e pelo bem estar dos outros no modo de amor e de obediência a Deus, voltado para Deus, e de amor e preocupação por Deus e pelos humanos.
O amor é o cumprimento da lei de Deus (Romanos 13:10). A lei de Deus só pode ser cumprida pelo "amor de Deus... derramado em nossos corações pelo Espírito Santo." (Romanos 5:5)
O Espírito Santo abrirá a mente para entender as instruções sobre como viver em Cristo, mas isso não forçará a pessoa a viver da maneira de Deus - ela não vai puxar ou empurrar ninguém.
Cada cristão deve tomar sua própria iniciativa, embora o Espírito de Deus lhe dê ajuda, fé e poder. Mas "tantos quantos são guiados pelo Espírito de Deus, estes são filhos de Deus. (Romanos 8:14).
